Yesterday I went to the zoo with Mette & Meaghan.
The whole day was epic, but the Butterfly enclosure was really something special.

Today I made a poster for Sumo night at the Nash.

The brief was for something that needed to be re-copied many times, with a generous area given for hand-written notes about the date and such. I used a low-fi aesthetic, simple colours that could stand cheap ink, and a no-bleed white border. Cheap and cheerful!

Dresden Codak is an amazing webcomic that updates rarely but is entirely worth it. The particularly intellectual author, Aaron Diaz, has written a hilarious article somewhat lampooning the debates that have raged over the possibilities of Artificial Intelligence. An excellent metaphor that gives insight to the potential of The Singularity by extrapolating a comparison of planes to birds is made all the more convincing by the perspective of the text.

In other news, I took some photos in Melbourne, but sadly my batteries went flat. Annoying!

I've always felt that Melbourne is a great place to find that peculiar old-school, living-in-a-garret artistic integrity, and that's always been a great draw. If nothing else, it is a great originator of those DIY projects that stand out in urban conformity, and where a lot of great artists get started. What gets me about Zines is the usually bare-bones constraints of the artistic tools used. You get the Henry Ford choices in print colour, If you want images included, get ready with the scissors, or, just as awesomely, scrawl them out with a biro. The text might have been hammered out on a typewriter, MS Notepad, or Word if they're feeling posh.

Here's a review of one place dedicated to the movement.

Game Game Game Game: Eufloria

I know I don't usually post much on this blog other than the project I last finished, but in this case I think it's merititious to mention Eufloria, my latest Indie game obssession. It feels visually similar to flOw, whilst playing out something like an incredibly relaxing RTS made by buddhists with a taste for swedish minimalism. Paring back the RTS to its' bare essentials, the entire game is played without ever leaving the mousepad, with right-click providing all the context necessary; it feels playable for simply anyone. But whilst this game satisfies me deeply for its' gameplay, the aesthetics beneath it are truly impressive, and a hallmark of the best indendant games on the market. (and also VALVe.) The expo is finally up and finished (technically I put most of it together yesterday, but I didn't have this cute little guy pimping me out at the time.), and tomorrow we attend, showing ourselves off to potential job offerers. Can't say I'm particularly nervous, but I wonder if putting more time into the magazines (see behind Roy II) then the mural was wise...Underneath the table is my polaroid camera, which I plan on taking some group shots of the class and teachers with. Should be fun!

Very exciting news. I have two work placements - one at a photographic studio and one at a small advertising studio. I'm glad to be at both for different reasons, though I'm mildly worried about my technical skills being a tad sub-par. On the other hand, I'm going there to learn!

During my folio interview, one of the teachers was particularly impressed with my work, and has very given me a name and a number to call of a start-up company looking for an employee.
I'm well chuffed at both the implicit recognition and the possibility of a real honest-to-goodness job in the graphic design industry! Thankyou Josè!

Now, I have a photo, but it's not one of mine. A really cool thing about the proliferation of photos on facebook is that in amongst the plastered together faces you occasionally get ingenuously artistic shots. Maggie, I stole this from you. Hope that's okay.

My girlfriend has a wonderful smile.

So, I need to decide between the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 and the EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6. the former is over twice the price of the latter, at $1,300 (lowest possible price). That's considerably more than the cost of the camera it's going to be used for.

Lenses are more of an investment than cameras, or so the story goes, but given this lens is only useable on cropped Canons... less so. Of course, the $500 dollar lens has its' flaws, but it is quite a cut above the starter kit. As this is meant to be a starter SLR, the 'reasonable' choice would be the EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6. It remains to be seen if I will be reasonable.

I can't wait to do some serious shootin'. Too much of my work has focussed on using vectors because you can do it in front of a computer and see the results straight away.

New Camera

It was my birthday yesterday, and as I'm a big bad twenty two year old, I went and bought myself a camera. Specifically, the Canon EOS 450d, aka Rebel. (I wanted it when I heard about it last year, but i'm only just now able to afford it.) Just the body kit though, as apparently the basic lens kit it comes with is rather crap. I'm no expert on the technical side of cameras, so I thought this would be a good starter SLR for me.

My first camera, a Fujifilm Finepix s5700, has and is a lovely, simple, no-nonsense SLR wannabe, perfect for the novice who thinks himself a cut above the happy snaps sort of camera - I will always have a soft spot for how easy it was to shoot with and understand (did I mention it was also so wonderfully cheap!). However, at 7.1 megapixels with a rather dinky zoom around the shutter button, it's more or less reached the ceiling of its' usefulness at this point.

I now have to buy a lens to start using my new camera - which means I'll finally be rolling up my sleeves and properly learning all the arcane and esoteric details that lie just beneath the surface of camera use - no more blissful ignorance with a built-in lens and an auto everything for me!

Murals

This is a thumbnail of the image that went to print to show to a client, pitching towards the development of a mural at the Mckellar Centre a few days ago. We were to design a mural which depicted 50 years of the Mckellar Centre in some way. I decided to theme the mural around growth, specifically in terms of its' development in terms of buildings and the people whom made it what it is. As can be seen, the mural is sectioned up in to ten year periods, with the buildings in the background roughly representing the time periods shown. in the foreground, different leaders of the institution are shown along with their name, so that a continuous stewardship is implied.

The image was, as you might expect for a pitch, made mostly with placeholders with an eye to overall composition rather than specifics, but nevertheless a couple of glaring flaws stand out to my eye: The year '79 is missing, and the colours used in the duotone are too dark to really work thematically as an uplifting piece. furthermore, in retrospect the use of stormclouds in the background was something of an oversight.

A CD Cover

We're to redesign a cd cover - the choice is up to us. The brief was to do something original and interesting - not just another jewel case - with an eye to recycling.

This design will incorporate the use of two stocks (gloss white card and brown recycled paper) and die cutting - the head will fold out, acting as a tab to pull out the cd and displaying part of the cd itself prior to opening. The small piece of paper at the neck should act as a peg to keep the head in place when it's folded back. The presentation is thus both structural and textural thanks to the interlocking stocks.

I'm still not a 100% on the text placement, but this gives a fairly good idea of what i have in mind.

It's occurred to me recently that I've not done any photoshop work for a while, so I thought that I'd do something simple and learn something new.I went through and tried out a few of the blur tools, and balanced the colour/shading so that the pupil was more prominent and the skin looked grittier.

Our newest project has been the creation of a sticker for Mambo. The brief was to make something relatively shocking and generally 'out there'. I don't think my current design is very shocking (or original), but I like it nevertheless. I'm thinking of referencing the 'chicken's head as a mcnugget' instead to up the gore and make a more striking piece... not sure yet.

When I attended AgIdeas 2008, it was life changing. That sounds silly and possibly trite, but it's true. The speakers were incredibly inspiring, and I quickly sketched the faces of each one and made very quick precis' of eachs presentation. Perhaps i'll upload some of my favorites later.

Anyway, I was pleasantly horrified to learn that I had been photographed at some point during the presentations, looking particularly nerdy and captivated. I know this because an email to my favorite teacher from Agideas used the aforementioned photo as part of the copy. He showed this to the classroom. (argghhh.)

He gave me the printout of the email - here's the crappy scan of it I made.

It's stupid that i'm proud of this, right?

Galvanina is the name of an Italian fruit drink/mineral water thing (I don't know what that's called) that I can occasionally find at the Coles near where I live.

Both the blood orange and pink grapefruit varieties are quite delicious, though it also comes in lemonade and pomegranate varieties. It has quite replaced my previous beverage of choice (Bundaburg ginger beer - I lived in Queensland for a time.), but the best (and strangest) thing about it is that it costs 99 cents per 750mL bottle.

I know I said I would do this next week, but as the hard drive that i've been waiting for to fix up a laptop didn't come (grr!) I had pent-up geekery to expend. So, you all get to learn how I went about fixing my Rotel headphones, with the able assistance of my room-mate David.

First of all, I required some equipment;

a carpet cutter
a wire stripper
a soldering iron
electrical solder
a new jack (I chose a gold 6.3mm one, but I could just have easily converted it to a smaller size for an Ipod or whatnot. I'm a dork, so I prefer to use an adapter.)
a cardboard mat or other safe surface to play on.

Step one:
obviously, the old jack had to go. after I snipped that off with some wire cutters, I had to expose the wires. This was a little fiddly, as the cord was too thick for the sort of wire strippers with which you put the cord in and then press and pull. Instead, I cut around the wire in small bites, as illustrated:The wires, as shown, were red, white, and black, which correspond to right headphone, left headphone and both, respectively. This was discovered after some thorough googling, and finding the general consensus. some set ups have enamel coating but unfortunately mine were covered in plastic sheaths which needed to be stripped:

Step Two:
I found the best way to strip the wires was with a carpet cutter and a steady hand, scraping the plastic off much the same way you would whittle a pencil with a knife. The wire strippers I had (see in the above photo) were sharp and pulled the wire out with the plastic sheath.

Step Two And A Bit:
Now is a great time to put on the screw on end-y bit (technical term) that was in the upper left hand corner of the first photo, onto the cord. This means when you solder the wires to the jack, you don't have the protective cover for the wires left over - I did this and had to remove the wires and re-solder it and my second job wasn't as good as the first. I didn't have any solder remover, so you may want to buy that too if you expect to make a buff job of it.

I found out which wire connects to which terminal, though the wires were different colours to mine in his blog. In case his site goes down, i'll repost the relevant quote:

The “Tip” (the end of the connector), which handles the left stereo channel. For me this was the blue wire, which I connected to the shortest terminal.
The “Ring” (the first segment of the connector), which handles the right stereo channel. This was the red wire, which I connected to the middle terminal.
The “Sleeve” (the second segment of the connector), which is the common ground. For my headphones, this was the conductor with no insulation on it. This was the wire with no insulation, and it connected to the ground terminal.

Step Three:
When soldering, you'll want to have something to hold the jack and cord in place while you wield the soldering iron and solder. I was fortunate to have a second pair of hands in the form of my room-mate, but if you're going to be touching the jack by hand, make sure not to handle it directly as it will get very hot. I used my adaptor which has a plastic covering to let David move it as I went to each terminal - but you could also use whatever it's to be plugged into to hold it there as long as it's turned off. Just don't touch the turntable or whatever with your soldering iron!

Step Four:
My jack came with the plastic cover above, but unfortunately it was lost. I used epoxy to insulate the wires instead, which does much the same thing with the added advantage of being very strong if the plug was pulled.

As you can see, I made a dog's breakfast of it, but fortunately this was mostly hidden by the metal covering and coil. I recommend you do both this and the soldering in a bright, well ventilated area.

And that was it! You should probably wait for the epoxy to set before screwing in the cover, but I just put it straight on as it was dripping off the jack and I don't plan on soldering through epoxy anyway.

I've been thinking a bit about the site and I plan to add some links to the sidebar. At this point all I have planned is a gallery and possible a résumé, as this blog is supposed to be about my work, after all. So far, the slideshow option isn't cutting the mustard.

I've also recently learnt how to save images in a way more appropriate to web viewing. I think blogspot has been doing much the same thing automatically however.

This was one of the natural sculptures done by a team last week.

So. on today's voyage home I espied a rather interesting little card:

I had just missed my bus and had an hour or so to kill. The temperature was 46 degrees at that time with fierce winds so I decided to sequester within the International section of the Airport. In short, I was bored.

Unaware that an arcade Time Crisis 2 was just around the corner from where I sat, I began to take notice of my surroundings. I spied a small bird (pictured in silhouette, above) and a stack of these cards. Now, I like the overall design. I will note it thus as I see it:

complimentary two colour seperation
eye-catching, complete lack of leading on the title's two words
- made possible by the former point
System of emphasis resulting from warm coloured text standing out.

That last point may be completely unintentional, but it highlights the word 'Comment' and then the space upon which to do so, which is the bare-bones purpose of the card.

The reason I found the card eye-catching, apart from this clean and simple design, was the incongruous Melbourne airport logo at the bottom. Granted, it had to be there in some form, but it looks very late nineties to early 2000's -ish and didn't really gel.

What should be done when such strange bedfellows meet? Or should the work have been made in the style of the logo?

Home With An Analog Clock

Well, i've had a great time with my folks, (though I am currently sitting through a quite persistent headache) and I leave Queensland tomorrow. My course restarts the day after that, so no rest for the wicked! I really can't wait to get back into it.

I managed to find an analog clock at an op-shop up here; it's a bit battered but I love it.

there's this tiny little orange light underneath the rotary number thingy that looks something like either a fairy light or the vacuum tubes i've heard tell about.

I'm pretty sure it's the former, though it would be awesome if it were the latter. (I think i'll pretend it is.)

I'm in Queensland at the moment, seeing the family. Where we are at the moment; Noosa, is basically reclaimed swamp, and as such the surrounding flora and fauna are quite active. The entire place feels alive.

I've been thinking of getting a tattoo recently. The only real reason I've not gotten one is I've never been able to think of anything sufficiently meaningful that I would want it on my body at all times.
