8-bit Helicopters!

http://www.donpixel.com/play/en/060612191956/

I'm having trouble playing this game without singing the "budgie the little helicopter" song. Whilst blowing buildings up.

Doo-do-do do-do Da-da da-da!

Zines: a report.

I've always felt that Melbourne is a great place to find that peculiar old-school, living-in-a-garret artistic integrity, and that's always been a great draw. If nothing else, it is a great originator of those DIY projects that stand out in urban conformity, and where a lot of great artists get started. What gets me about Zines is the usually bare-bones constraints of the artistic tools used. You get the Henry Ford choices in print colour, If you want images included, get ready with the scissors, or, just as awesomely, scrawl them out with a biro. The text might have been hammered out on a typewriter, MS Notepad, or Word if they're feeling posh.

Here's a review of one place dedicated to the movement.

The new look

The deliberate choice of lo-fi solutions for their incidental, signature aesthetic; the reproduction of imperfection; Wabi-sabi.

Lomography,
Stark, bright colouring (cyan, magenta, lime) or colouring with a limited palette
Scratches, scuffs, cuts, spatters, rips and rot
Hand illustrated
Hand Painted
Ben day dots...

I know I'm a bit late to the table, but this is the new look I'm going to attempt. Kind of Googie meets Spaghetti Western, hopefully!

Tea Towels

Etsy is pretty great, though it's mainly a U.S phenomena. I got Meaghan a tea-towel from Brookish there. (It did not include the fruit, unfortunately, but fruit make great props!)

Peter's Back From Denmark!

Well, he's been back for a while, but this is the first time I've photographed him.
(for those who don't know Peter, he's on the right. my housemate dave is on the left.)

This is our den of Ye Olde Video Games, hence the bronze gilt mirror, suit of armor, vintage couch and CRT TV. See how many consoles you can spot in the tangle by their feet. (click to enlarge.)

E-folio

I made an E-folio as part of a self promoting magazine - here's a link. It's pretty big because it was meant to be printable, so be prepared to wait. And wait. Maybe get a cup of coffee.

Game Game Game Game: Eufloria

I know I don't usually post much on this blog other than the project I last finished, but in this case I think it's merititious to mention Eufloria, my latest Indie game obssession. It feels visually similar to flOw, whilst playing out something like an incredibly relaxing RTS made by buddhists with a taste for swedish minimalism. Paring back the RTS to its' bare essentials, the entire game is played without ever leaving the mousepad, with right-click providing all the context necessary; it feels playable for simply anyone. But whilst this game satisfies me deeply for its' gameplay, the aesthetics beneath it are truly impressive, and a hallmark of the best indendant games on the market. (and also VALVe.) See the trailer here and then grab the demo here to see what I mean.

My Card, Good Sir.

The expo is finally up and finished (technically I put most of it together yesterday, but I didn't have this cute little guy pimping me out at the time.), and tomorrow we attend, showing ourselves off to potential job offerers. Can't say I'm particularly nervous, but I wonder if putting more time into the magazines (see behind Roy II) then the mural was wise...Underneath the table is my polaroid camera, which I plan on taking some group shots of the class and teachers with. Should be fun!

Progression: Eyes

I do seem to have a thing for eyes. I find the colour variations and strange root-like structure of the stroma fascinating, and also the curves and angles resulting from the open eyelids.

In case you've been wondering about the new style of colours to the photos I've been taking, don't worry - I'm just learning a bit more about photoshop, using masks, curves and whatnot.
